Home Security Tips from the Douglas County Sheriff

July 15, 2009

With the temperatures rising in the heat of summertime, it's tempting to leave doors and windows open while away or during the night. But it's important to keep safety first and it is essential every homeowner or resident take on the responsibility of making sure they follow crime prevention practices in and around their homes or apartments.

Effective home security can be accomplished by properly locking doors and windows and having visible, well lit entryways. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, about six out of every ten completed burglaries take place though unlocked doors and windows. Use the following checklist to ensure your home safety. Visit the Douglas County Sheriff's Web site for more information.

  • All doors and windows should be locked at night and every time you leave the house.
  • All entryway doors should have keyed entry locks and a steady deadbolt lock installed into the frame of the door.
  • Spare keys are kept with friends or trusted neighbor, not under a door mat or flower pot.
  • Windows are always secured, even if they are open just a few inches.
  • Shrubs and bushes are trimmed so there is no place for someone to hide.
  • House number is clearly displayed so emergency personnel can find the house quickly.
  • Every outside door has a working light to illuminate the area around it.
  • Gate latches, garage doors, and shed doors are locked after every use.
  • Another important step to good home security is getting to know your neighbors.
  • Joining or starting a Neighborhood Watch group is another proactive approach to crime prevention in your neighborhood. Call Community Resources to start a program, 303.660.7544.
