City Approves Urban Renewal Plan

After two years of discussions and numerous community, stakeholder and planning meetings, the Castle Pines North City Council adopted the Castle Pines North Urban Renewal Plan following a public hearing on May 25. Since the City was incorporated, City Council members have consistently considered the formation of an Urban Renewal Authority (URA) to be an important additional tool with which to pursue long term economic redevelopment policies in order to ensure the ongoing financial health of the City and to promote reinvestment in the Castle Pines North community.  “This was a very deliberate process that began with the previous City Council,” said Councilmember Doug Gilbert. “The City Council has held more than ten meetings with key stakeholders to explain what an urban renewal authority (URA) is, how it will impact businesses and area service districts, and how it will help our community enhance its already vibrant character.”

Additionally, the City is currently finalizing several Intergovernmental Agreements (IGAs) regarding the URA with area governmental agencies including the South Metro Fire Rescue Authority, Castle Rock Fire and Rescue and the Parker Water and Sanitation District.  The IGAs are aimed at ensuring that these local service providers will experience little to no impact, financially or otherwise, as a result of the Castle Pines North URA. Local government participation in these various IGAs highlights overall support of the City’s inclusive process of forming the URA.  Following discussion of the IGAs, they will be on the agenda for approval during the June 8th City Council meeting.

With the warmer weather season, residents are out enjoying all that makes Castle Pines North a special place to live, from the parks and miles of trails in CPN to children playing outdoors.  As residents are spending additional hours of each day outside, it is all the more imperative that people drive with caution and heed the posted speed limit.  Drivers should remain alert to the small children, pets, cyclists and others outdoors with whom they are sharing the road.

If you believe you have a speeding problem in your neighborhood, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit can conduct a traffic speed survey. To learn more about how you can request this survey, contact Deputy Rob Rotherham at 303.663.7703.
