Mayor's Message Mayor Jeffrey HuffIn this month’s message I’d like to provide citizens with an update on public works initiatives. Public works includes street maintenance and lighting, traffic signals and signage, permit processing and related services that help keep the city running smoothly.

As you are no doubt aware, some areas of the community have deteriorating roads, which is due to age and inferior structural pavement design. I have asked City Council to increase resources targeted to road maintenance. We are stepping up efforts to repair sections of road, particularly along Castle Pines Parkway and Monarch Boulevard. We have implemented steps to bring a quicker response times and added flexibility to managing repairs. Eric Guth, Public Works Director, has been tasked with developing a proactive pavement management program that will include patching, repairing and replacement.

This spring we expect to provide Council an accurate assessment of necessary road repairs, as well as the capital investment required to do so. We will then set priorities for reconstruction, repairs or maintenance. Funding these improvements will be a challenge, since the city has limited revenues through our sales tax and fees. However, Council is well aware of the problems and has appropriated $100,000 for capital investment, which could be used to address some of the deteriorating streets.

Finally, construction continues on the community’s newest amenity: Elk Ridge Park. Citizens funded the park through dues paid to the Master Homeowners Association. Elk Ridge Park has come to fruition through the hard work and dedication of the Parks Authority Board. I’d like to thank Board President Anna Mallinson and Parks and Open Space Manager Charlie Fagan for their ongoing commitment to this project.

We have many opportunities ahead of us, and I look forward to the coming of spring.

Respectfully,
Jeffrey Huff
Mayor, Castle Pines North

Douglas County school buses get a new look

Douglas County Sheriff David Weaver is excited about his partnership with the Douglas County Educational Foundation, Douglas County School District and the buses that take children to school. You can see signs displaying the Text-A-Tip and Youth Education & Safety in Schools (Y.E.S.S.) programs on 20 Douglas County School District buses. Both programs allow deputies and kids to interact in a positive and proactive manner during a critical time when kids are likely to be confronted with difficult issues such as drugs and alcohol, bullying and peer pressure. Spring forward into daylight saving time

Spring forwardSpring is just around the corner, and daylight saving time is about to kick in. DST (in the U.S. and Canada) begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 14. Make sure all your clocks are set forward one hour! Did you know that approximately 70 countries use DST in at least one portion of their country? Japan, India and China are the only major industrialized countries that do not observe some form of daylight saving.
